Good Samaritan Council 14181 in Ellijay conducted a food drive and then delivered food boxes on November 21st and 22nd in time to help needy families prepare a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Requests for non-perishable food or cash went out to the Good Samaritan parishioners during a three-week period.
Through their very generous
donations and additional cash provided by the Council, the Knights filled thirty-eight large boxes plus a turkey for
each family. Past Grand Knight Harrell Newbury, Deputy Grand Knight Louis C. Salinas, and Brother Louis G. Salinas
are shown preparing to deliver the first load.
The parishioners of Saint Monica Catholic Church and the Knights of Council 12883 presented an ultrasound machine to the Pregnancy Resource Center of Walton on November 9th. The machine is valued in excess of $33,000, with half of the money for the purchase of the machine raised within St. Monica’s and its Knights Council. These funds were then matched by the Knights of Columbus Supreme Headquarters.
The ultrasound machine placed
in the Walton Pregnancy Resource Center is saving lives as mothers see their baby and realize that it is a child
and not a choice! The Saint Monica Council is currently raising additional monies to fund another ultrasound machine
for a pregnancy center in the Atlanta area.
Knights from Council 7601 in McDonough presented a plaque on August 17th to Helen Plath, an employee at a local supermarket. Helen has helped the Council's charitable efforts over the past several years by donating bread and pastries to the Council to provide to parishioners after Sunday Mass services.
Council 7601 only asks for
donations for these bakery items. Over the years, hundreds of dollars have been collected which are then used in
support of various charities. Without the efforts of brother Al Florez (pictured) and the good folks at the supermarket,
this money would not be available and the parish community would not receive the great benefit of the bread and pastry
which many can not afford.
Knights from Savannah area councils teamed up with the West Broad Street YMCA to provide lunch to dozens of local youths. The project ran August 8-19 and served a nutritious lunch to children from West Savannah public housing neighborhoods.
These children are typically
part of the free lunch program during the school year; however, during the summer, they often go without. Many of
these children get just one meal a day -- this lunch provided by the Knights. The Knights involved have been moved
by the number of kids who have made a point to come up and thank them for the lunch.
